Ross Ching

Ross Ching was born in January 9, 1986 in San Jose, CA. I found Ross project Eclectic on their Vimeo page.

After view all the videos, I had much questions... and Ross was so nice to answer this.

What are you doing at this time and where are you?

I recently moved to Los Angeles, California about 6 weeks ago and am looking for work.  In the meantime of looking for work though, I'm working on little projects of my own like Eclectic 3.0 and others hoping that someone will see it on the internet and like it.

How you did come to the photography?

I became interested in film when I was in high school and my friends and I would make skateboard videos and Star Wars fan films.  After a while I thought my stuff was good enough to possibly pursue a career in entertainment.

How many pictures do you have in your portfolio?

I don't exactly have a set number of photos in my portfolio, but rather, I have a series of shots that are my favorite.  Whenever anyone asks to see my work, I show them those.  This list is always changing as I shoot more and more.

I found you about your Eclectic project. What was your reason to make this?

The reason I made Eclectic 1 was because I was looking to make something that stood apart from everyone else.  Back in 2006, not many other people were doing time lapse movies.  It was so well received on the internet (over 200,000 views now) that I decided to make 2.0 and 3.0.

And what equipment did you use?

Over the years I've upgraded and experimented with different stuff but here's the main stuff:
Eclectic 1: Canon Rebel xt AND Sigma 28-300 lens
Eclectic 2: Canon 40d and Rebel xt  and Canon 10-22mm
Eclectic 3: Canon 40d and Rebel xt, Canon 10-22mm and Canon TS-E 24mm

Do you have an special interest why do you are using Canon?

I use Canon just that was the kind of cameras that I was used to growing up, but I'm sure I could do it with any camera.

Who support you or did you all alone?

Financially, my parents supported me the most. But actually researching locations, developing these techniques and driving out to the places was all me.  I've had a bit of help from friends and family, but for the most part everything has been done by me.

What was the best experience/ adventure at your trips?

My favorite place that I've been to has been the Grand Canyon.  I didn't go to the typical tourist trap there, but rather drove out 70 mies on a dirt road to the part of the canyon that nobody goes.  I was the only person around for probably 50 miles, and standing next to a 5000 foot drop.

Do you have an idea for new projects?

As of right now, I am thinking very hard for new ideas.  A good idea is like a needle in a haystack.  I don't have any right now since I put an end to the Eclectic series.  But I'm thinking about doing a music video, or another experimental piece.  If anyone else has ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Do you believe, that a photographer at this time can good life with his job?

I think it's very hard to get that first job in the industry.  Most people won't actually be doing what they want until many years down the road.  But what will differentiate someone from everyone else is original ideas... very very hard to come up with but could turn someone into an overnight celebrity.

Thank you Ross for the interview.
